What Readers Are Saying:

emotional and heartfelt read” – Laura H (The Voluptuous Book Diva)

one of the most amazing books I have ever read and a great contemporary read” – KittyKat (Goodreads Reviewer)

It’s one of those books where everything worked really well together. The story. The characters. The relationships. And the writing. It was just so beautiful.” – Nicole (Bookish Thoughts)

excerpt

Jodi squeezed my hand. “Do whatever you think is right. Your gut won’t lie. Mine sure didn’t, and look how you turned out.”

I smiled.

After a few more questions, like did I have any siblings—no—and where did my cousins live—just over the border into New Mexico—the guard announced our fifteen minutes were up. I fought the urge to cling to Jodi’s hand as she stood. I hadn’t spent nearly enough time with her.

“You write me. Let me know how you’re doing, ‘kay?”

I nodded, my mouth drying, and she backed out of the room with a wave. When the door from the visitation area to the cellblock closed, I covered my mouth, my chest hitching. Mom put her arm around my shoulders, and I leaned into her. I’d been so afraid that Jodi would have considered me a burden, that she would’ve hate me for ruining her life, like I originally loathed my baby for messing up mine. But that was so far from the reason she’d placed me for adoption.

“She had loved me, Mom,” I said, my voice shaking.

She longs to live in the Scottish Highlands, and her favorite place in history is Medieval England—she’d even give up her Internet and running water to go back in time! Good afternoon everyone! Today I have a very special book to present to the world. High Summons is an amazing first book in the series Warlock of Rochester published by Clean Reads!

Jon Blythe is sick of waiting for his Yoda. After years of hiding his magic, he’s ready to retire from his mortal life, drop out of college, and jump into the world of demon hunters. He just didn’t really expect a bleach blond bookstore clerk with light up toys for weapons. Unfortunately, Jordan is Jon’s only hope. When rogue magic users come tocleanreads.png Rochester with a malicious plan, the odd couple strikes out to save the day. Jordan might not be what Jon expected, but between demons and Econ homework, the demons win every time. Wild nights drag Jon further from normal into the world where his father vanished. Maybe he’s becoming an addict. Maybe magic just comes with a price. Either way, he’s hooked.

Gun Shots or Fireworks

Life isn’t what it used to be. It’s so sad that everyone has to live in fear of dying. There have been so many shootings all over the world, with no rhyme or reason. It’s a depressing world and while some live carefree and happy, others are living day to day with panic sitting in their veins. They mull over each shooting in their head and can’t escape the horror of today’s society. People are afraid to leave their homes, their families; they’re afraid to live. It’s sick.

One simply fireworks show make people panic.

I was in the movie theater tonight and thought it might be my time to go. There were small pops outside our theatre room and they steadily got faster and louder, but kept a steady rhythm. Everyone in the audience started whispering and looking around, completely ignoring the movie we all paid for. That’s when I started getting nervous. I started planning in my head on what I would do if there really was a shooter in another room.

When the pops sounded at rapid speed, people shot from their seats, screaming and running toward the exits.

I kept asking my husband, What’s going on? What’s going on? The only reason I didn’t fall apart and start running was because of my husband. He stayed calm and collected. He had his own plan. I trusted him and didn’t want to leave his side.

The moment someone opened the emergency door to the outside they saw the fireworks. The terror died down. People returned to their seats. They thanked the person sitting next to them. They might have even thanked God or whoever they may believe in.

This all happened within 3 mins, but it was the longest most terrifying 3 mins of my life.

I’m disappointed in the world and don’t want to live in fear anymore. We all need to change. We need to make this country safer, more accepting, and less terrifying. I’d like to one day go back to the movies and not fear that the person in the row behind me is unstable and is ready to end lives. That’s not how anyone should live.

The Importance of Social Media

Authors, whether they are published through a larger publishing house, small press, or self published, need to know how important it is to be on social media. It’s 2016 and everyone from the age of 8 to 95 are on some form of social media.

Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are a few essential accounts an author will need. Your fans will want to know how to find you and your books. They want to be able to track your success and feel like they’re your best friend.

This generation is online and ready to connect to their heart’s desire. Should one have a craving for a specific book by a certain author but can’t remember the name, the first thing that fan will do is research it online. If they know the author’s name, and if that author has diligently set up various social media networks, then it’s a piece of cake for that fan. They want easy. That want to be connected.

Back when publishing houses provided most of the marketing and didn’t require the authors to have social media, there weren’t as many books getting published. Now, every writer, friend, neighbor, and cousin can go on Amazon and publish their own works, but it’s the self-published authors that go the extra step and create a brand for themselves and market their books, that really succeed.

I have ten social media accounts. Ten!! My social media accounts are all linked under my full author name, Dana Louise Provo. You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Goodreads, Amazon, Pinterest, Tumbler, Wattpad, Google, and WordPress. And yes, I use all of my accounts.

Being an author doesn’t just mean writing books. No, being an author means building your brand and marketing yourself. The biggest part of publishing is social media. Yes, you’re actually publishing a book and that’s huge, but it won’t sell until you market yourself.

So, if you are an author with no social network accounts and you want to be the next bestseller, you’re going to start working extremely hard to market yourself and your book. Get a few sites, gain your followers and start selling your brand. It will help you in the long run.

You can find all the links to my accounts on the About page or do a google search for my full name. I wish every author out there the best of luck in your publishing endeavors.

Secrets with A.B. Penner

A.B. Penner is writer, dreamer, and lover of all music and nature. She currently resides in abpennerCanada with her husband, and two spirited daughters. Prior to fulfilling the role of a domestic goddess, she worked in the mental health field. She can always be found reading or writing, finding enjoyment in her passion for running and yoga, and spending time with her family.

I’m so happy to have been given the chance to interview A.B. Penner! She is charming with a unique voice and a creative imagination. I’m honored to have her as a friend!

A. B., can you tell us about your upcoming book? Rising from Ashes is a New Adult/Contemporary Romance.

Charlie Ray hasn’t always had an easy life. Born to a mother of addiction and abandoned by her father, Charlie continuously faces a life of self-preservation amidst the physical and emotional abuse she endures daily.

When Emerson Knight, a boy determined to protect her, enters her life, her whole world shifts for the better. Charlie struggles to ignore her growing feelings for Emerson, who has become a constant in her life, eventually giving in to a love she has always wished for. But all good things must come to an end, and when Charlie is presented with a life-altering decision, she pushes Emerson away, toward a future without her.

Certain she would never see him again, fate intervenes, crossing their paths six years later. Thrown into a whirlwind of second chances and self-reflection, Charlie fights to let go of her past, heal old wounds, and finally grow into a promising future with the man she’s always loved, who has no intention of leaving her behind this time.

That sounds like it’s going to be a great book! What inspired you to write your first book?  About 3-4 years ago I read a book that I was rather unimpressed with, and quite shocked that the author landed a publishing contract. This is huge considering I’m a fairly easy going person, and read for enjoyment. So, to have read a novel that elicited such feelings came as a surprise to me. Nonetheless, I did what anyone else would do after reading a poorly written book(In my eyes anyways)- I called up my best friend and told her that I bet I could write a book better and land a publishing contract, because “if this author can do it, than so can I.”

Wow! Looks like you set your mind to something and you did it! How do you find or make time to write?  This is definitely tricky, I think for any writer. For myself, I get up as early as 5am every morning in order to squeeze in quality writing time before the rest of the household wakes up. While the early mornings can be tough, it is the only time of day where I experience little to no interruptions. I also find that I am more refreshed in the early morning hours than late at night after I’ve put the children to bed, therefore, the ideas and creative juices flow freely.

Tell me, are you an outliner or pantser?  I’m definitely more of a pantser. When I wrote Rising from Ashes, I knew where I wanted the story to go, but allowed the characters to pull me through it from one scene to the next. If I do any outlining, it is to write down major plot points, but what happens in-between those major events is entirely up to the characters.

Total opposite from me, but everyone is different. How long on average does it take you to write a book?  Great question, and truthfully, I’m not sure how long it takes me on average to write a book. From start to finish, it probably took me about 9-10 months to write Rising from Ashes, with majority of the content written in the last two months. As for my romance-suspense novel that I’m currently rewriting now, I started that 3 years ago. I find I work better with a deadline. Once I had a deadline set for Rising from Ashes, I hunkered down and committed to writing every single day, no matter what the word count was at the end of the day. I have just recently set a deadline for my rewrite, because without it, I fear this poor novel will never receive the ending it deserves.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?  Oh, we’ve all been here haven’t we? It’s terrible when you sit at the computer or notebook and stare at a blank page for hours waiting for inspiration to come hit you with the “stick of incredible idea’s.”  I find that going for a run or bike ride helps to clear my head and work through plot holes. Some of my best idea’s have come to me whilst in the shower, and listening to music is such a great inspirational support for me, I’m not sure I could write without it. I know most writer’s aren’t too happy when people give the advice of taking a step back from your work to give your mind a break, and then come back to it later, but the truth is, it works. If you’re frustrated and struggling, go do something else. Occupy your brain with something else, and I bet those idea’s, or the solution to that plot hole will come to you when you aren’t thinking about it constantly.

I’ll have to keep that in mind. writer’s block is a terrible thing to have when you really want to write. What are some of your hobbies?  I have too many! haha. I love to run, but recently that has been replaced with Yoga, and Pilates. I love to bike, and hike and in general, just spend as much time in nature outdoors. I love to scrapbook(Yes, I will finish my youngest daughter’s baby book…one day…), and bake and decorate cakes. I enjoy gardening, despite my tendencies to kill the plants I love most, and reading and writing. Dancing is something else I enjoy, as well as knitting, and making my own homemade lotions.

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?  I would love to visit Machu Piccu in Peru, and visit Wales, Norway, Denmark, and almost every tropical country that is home to beautiful beaches surrounded by the expanse of the ocean.

Tea or coffee?  Both. Some mornings require copious amounts of coffee to be consumed, but tea is always on hand, especially Earl grey.

You were just given an Island. What would you name it? And who would live there withIsland you?  Oh, I am not good with naming anything, let alone islands, but if I had to name an island, it would be Happy Island. Rather simple, right? Well, the way I see it, is life it too short to be unhappy, and that feeling of being content and loved and grateful is wonderful. So, why not have an island that made you feel all of the happiness it had to offer. On such an island, I would want to share it with my family and friends.

How about the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?  Ooo. Um… I don’t think I’ve eaten anything too crazy. I’ve eaten octopus, escargot, and liver to name a few off the top of my head. When presented with the opportunity to try snake, frog’s legs, and crocodile, I passed.

Are you a morning or night person?  Morning, despite it taking a little while for me to come around and fully wake up.

Important question! Do you have any pets?  I do. I have a 7 year old English Bulldog named Tucker.

Oh, I love English bulldogs! If you could bring one of your characters to life, who would it be?  All of them? Haha. Seriously, to pick one is tough. I like to think that I’m creating wonderful book boyfriends, and strong female leads that hopefully readers will fall in love with. But, if I have to choose one from Rising from Ashes, I would probably be Emerson. He has the ability to call Charlie out on her crap, love fiercely, and fight for what he wants. He pushes Charlie, and yet he is patient and understanding. He is her constant in life, and I think anyone, for the most part, anyone would love to have someone like him in their life.

Do you have any advice for other writers?  Write. Do not give up. Write for yourself and not for others. Be open to constructive criticism, and don’t allow yourself to become consumed by the negativity of others who give you nothing but negative absolutes. You deserve just as much space in the creative world as the next person, so use your talent and enjoy it.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?  I am currently working on my rewrite of my romance-suspense novel that I started 3 years ago. It follows the lives of Aria, an art graduate who has moved across the country to escape a past that haunts her daily, and Jake, the resident Search and Rescue Technician who is battling with demons of his own. The two of them find themselves caught in a whirlwind of intense love, and passion, but when their future becomes threatened by the events Aria wishes she could forget, she realizes there is no escape, and sometimes facing your worst nightmare is the only way to find peace and move on.

That sounds awesome! If you are interested in following A.B. Penner and keeping tabs on what she’s doing with her writing career, please follow her below:

Thank you so much, A.B. Penner for talking tropical islands, writer’s block, and the weirdest things you’ve eaten. It was a pleasure getting to see what goes on inside your head!

Born on August 25th, 2016

Babies are all the rage when you’re in your late twenties. After countless questions about when I’ll have a baby, it’s finally happening! I’m having my first baby, my novel! The pregnancy began in June of 2015.

The First Trimester: There was so much to think about… Names, doctors, what the characters will look like. Picking the perfect name was high on my list of things to do. I settled on Bleeding Hearts after many chats with my friend HollyI started this crazy idea of mine and finished the complete book within two months.

img_1638
This is NOT the cover of my book.

The road to publication has been rough, to say the least. My good friend, Alyssa was the first to experience my mood swings as she tore through the first, initial edits to help shape the outcome of my book baby. If I didn’t start off in the right direction, my baby would come out with some birth defects. We worked together, and she chose her words carefully as Alyssa knew a first time mother might strike back at her suggestions.

My ambition to find the right doctor to produce my book was high. I researched, joined contests, and queried for several months. That’s when the stress really started. I had worried that I’d never be able to find someone who would want to help birth my book, but I did! Back in February 2015, Stephanie Taylor, book expert, lovely person, and owner of Clean Reads offered to be the one to bring my book to life. She was exactly what I had wanted in a book doctor.

The Second Trimester: Usually this is when things calm down, but not for me. With edits every month for three months, this was a hard road as my nausea lasted a little longer than expected. Each time I’d send in edits, I felt my baby book was growing! Bleeding Hearts was going to be an amazing novel, I just knew it! During this time, I had many doubts that my book wouldn’t make the cut, that somehow, Stephanie would cut me as a patient. We hung in there through several anxiety filled emails asking countless amounts of questions and sharing my worries with her. She always gave me the answers I needed to make the months pass by quickly.

The Third Trimester: Finally, it’s the home stretch. After several joined book parties and winning gifts, to keep me at ease, from my Clean Reads family, the time has come. It’s this period in your pregnancy that you get a finalized due date. In just two short months, on August 25th, 2016, my dream come true of having my fist book is going to be a reality. Mark your calendars! My book baby will be available for purchase as EBook on Amazon, Barnes & Noble.

Stalk my Facebook page to find out more information. I will be hosting an online Facebook Release Party the following Saturday, 8/27 for my book so watch out for that!

Here is a blurb of my book along with two of my favorite memes!

Bleeding Hearts is a story about a young woman willing to put her heart on the line to find the perfect man.

Orphaned at an early age, now twenty-four-year-old Camryn Lucks is ready to commit to find that special someone, and so accepts a date from a charming, gallant, handsome stranger. The last thing she imagines after accepting that first date with Carson would actually be the beginning of her worst nightmare.

Red roses, a reminder of her parents’ killer, soon become an emblem of horror for Cami as one by one, those closest to her fall victim to a serial killer. Cami becomes an obsession for Carson, the man she had finally allowed herself to love. Not only is he vying for her heart, but also her life.

Finding herself in a whirlwind of torments shadowed by the blood-colored bloom, Cami finds solace in Isaac, a neighboring police officer. She’s desperate to escape the haunting memories, but she must revisit them in order to catch her would-be killer. Living life in constant fear has driven Cami to second-guess every choice she makes. Will the police catch the illusive murderer, or will Cami be forced to face him once again?

Again… As a reminder, Bleeding Hearts will be released on August 25, 2016

Sunshine Blogger Awards

Victoria Greenwell tagged me in the Sunshine Blogger Awards along with 10 other lovely bloggers.  Thank you so much for tagging me! So, what do I have to do?

Here are the rules of the Sunshine Blogger Award:

• Thank the person who nominated you.
• Answer the 11 questions you’ve been asked.
• Nominate 11 other bloggers, making sure to let each one know that they are nominated.
• Ask the nominees 11 questions.

Below are the questions I received:

  1. If you dress up for Halloween, cosplay, or other less commonly accepted occasions, describe your last two costumes. Okay, last Halloween I was half a vampire. Yes, I mean half. I painted my face, wore fake teeth, and wore a cape. But underneath that cape, I was a normal human, jeans and a sweatshirt. Then last June, I went to a ren faire and fully dressed up as a forest princess.danaren
  2. What movie or tv show would you consider a guilty pleasure? I love any variation of Cinderella!
  3. If you could live in any fictional world (whether it’s yours or someone else’s creation), where would you live and why? I kind of want to live in Shadowland. It’s a world, total opposite of ours that my sister and I made up. It rains upside down and the drops are black. And trash grows into brick buildings and disappears. Cool? I think so. I’d want to just see the world I’d created.
  4. You’ve been imprisoned for high treason and have been sentenced to death and there is no chance that the governor is going to call. Describe in detail your last meal. I think I would just want a pineapple upside down cake.
  5. Answer one of these or both: Name your favorite Doctor on Doctor Who. Name your favorite James Bond. Daniel Craig. Hands down.
  6. If you could choose any piece of music or song to be your theme song, what would it be? My Day by Danielle Bradberry.
  7. Concerning sleep, do you consider it a wondrous thing that you just can’t get enough of, or are you one of those “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” people? I love sleep but I am also one of those “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” people.
  8. Has any character that you’ve created ever done anything that took you by surprise? Yes! Cami from Bleeding Hearts is one character I couldn’t control! She tends to make some decisions that I wouldn’t necessarily make.
  9. Describe something from a movie, book or tv where you would have written it better. I actually don’t think about writing things better. Authors and screenwriters have their own way of doing things and I don’t feel like I could do better than them. 🙂
  10. Are you a shipper? If so, name some of the ships that you love. (For example, if you watch the Flash and you think Barry and Caitlyn should get together, that means you are shipper for SnowBarry.) I have a wonderful Ship name for two of my characters in my book Bleeding Hearts. Issami! Read to find out who they are!!
  11. Sentence fragments. Love them or hate them? I actually like them. I feel like they serve a purpose but don’t over use them!

So, there are my 11 questions answered. Now, here are the questions I’d like answered:

  1. What is your middle name?
  2. When did you first learn how to ride a bike?
  3. Are you the kind of person that likes to plan things or go out on a whim?
  4. What is your favorite thing to wear?
  5. Name a country then explain why you named it?
  6. What is your occupation?
  7. If you could own only one animal, what would it be?
  8. Which element do you relate to the most? Why? Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Spirit.
  9. Are you planning any vacations this year? If so, where?
  10. Name your favorite book?
  11. Lastly, do you believe that there are aliens in space?

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about your writing process?

I am an outliner. When I come up with a story idea, the characters come first then the plot. I write down everything from looks to personality to favorite color so I know…
